EXERCISE 2
In this exercise you will be introduced to the software
programs American Yellow Pages, MS Access and Streets Plus. First, you
will take information from the AYP, create a database and import the information
to be applied to Streets Plus. You will need to make a copy of both the
database and the map you have created.
Part 1 AYP

Insert the CD ROM into the disk drive. To get the program
running, Click on Start -> Programs -> American Yellow Pages CD ROM ->
American Yellow Pages. Click throughout the continues until you get through
the first page.

Once in, at main screen, click with your mouse on By
Yellow Page Heading.

At cursor, type in the area of business that you wish to
locate.

Click on Find Yellow Page Heading then on Continue
.

Now type in the State and the City of which you want to locate
your businesses, then click on Search.
Once all businesses are listed they will need to be exported.

Click on Export, located on the right hand side of screen.

Now make sure that the space All Listings are
checked, then click on Export to a File.

Name the dbf file. (i.e. bars). then Click OK.

Close out of AYP
Part 2 Microsoft Access
-
Open MS Access ( Start-> Programs->MS Office->MS Access)
-
Click on File then New Database.
-
Once in New Database, at directories, click on the c:/
twice then ayp97 twice.
-
Now at file, type in a new file name, click OK, and a new
database should open.
Now the information that you found in the AYP needs to imported
to this table in order for it to be used in properly in Streets Plus.

To Import the information, click on File ->
Import -> (scroll to) dBase IV -> the dbf
file which you previously named -> Import.

Once the import is successful, click OK. Also,
close the select a file.
Now, in order for the information to be read correctly, a
deliminated textfile must be created.

Open up File -> export -> Text
[deliminated] -> OK.

At MsAccess Object, Object should say whatever you named
your file ( i.e bars), and views set at table. Click OK.

At Export to a file, your .txt file should appear (i.e. bars.txt),
click OK.

In text options, w/ mouse mark store field names in first
row, hit OK.

Close out of MS Access.
Part 3 Street Plus
In this section, you will now import the table that you
created in MS Access to this program in order to create a map that you
will print.

Place Streets Plus CD ROM into disk drive. ( This will automatically
load the program itself.)

Once loaded, click on Imported Pushpins from File.
-
At Find Your Textfile, click on the file Ayp97, then
click on the textfile you named.
Now you need to modify the information as it will appear
in the map.

For pushpin Type, click on Balloon for Short Note,
choose the type of symbol you want to use. Make sure the pushpin set says
Imported Pushpins.

Click NEXT.
-
Now at separator, click on comma then next.
At Data Preview, each field will have to be named in order
to be displayed on your map.

With your mouse, highlight Field 1. Now go
to category, click on name. The field one should be replaced
with the title name.

Repeat the step above up to, including Field 5 with the corresponding
titles..
-
Click on Next.
-
In order for the information to show, you must designate,
with your mouse, what information you want to include. Once you have marked
each corresponding box, hit next.

The last screen asks if you want the pushpins to be edited,
click on yes.
-
Click on Finish.
A screen will now appear asking if you want to check each
entry, just click on Automatic at the bottom of the screen.
This will automatically create your push pins.
Now that you have created the Pushpins to be placed on
the map, you will want to view them.
You should now be looking at a screen of the entire United
States. In order to zoom in on the pins, using your left mouse, create
a box around the area of which they were created, and click inside the
box. ( To create a box, holding down the left button of the mouse key,
dragging it from the top left vertically to the bottom right, this will
create the box.
Your push pins now should be visible!
PRINTING YOUR EXERCISE
You need only one copy of the table that you created in
MS Access and the map in Streets Plus.
For MS Access

You need to make sure that the database that you have created
is open. (Open Access -> File -> Open Database -> your file)

Click on File -> Print ->Setup.

At setup, make sure that the printer is set at specific Printer
and designated at EPSON STYLUS COLOR 1520.

Click OK.
For Streets Plus
You will be printing from the program directly.

Click on Options.
-
Make sure that the printer is designated for the EPSON
STYLUS COLOR 1520.

Click OK.
